HBHS Headmaster's Message Friday, 27 May 2022
Tēnā koutou katoa,
I hope that the first four weeks of term have been positive and happy for you and your son, as we settle in to a very busy and productive term. It has been very special celebrating the sense of normality with a full school assembly, assemblies inside, meetings with parents, and the start of a busy winter sports season.
Thank you for remaining vigilant with your son’s health, and for all of the communications I receive from so many of you. It has been reassuring having high attendance rates over the past four weeks, as we focus on a term which is so critically important in the year’s cycle of teaching and learning.
Although the impact of COVID has reduced this term, we are still experiencing pressure from staff absences. Much of this comes from staff illness, with COVID and other seasonal ailments, and also from a number of staff’s children having COVID.
This week, we have struggled to cover classes with well over 20 staff away each day, and so we have recognised, reluctantly, that we will have to return to a form of rostering home over the next two weeks, where some very real pressure points exist. These arise in part from our exchanges with Auckland Grammar and New Plymouth Boys’ High School.
I appreciate your understanding. We recognise the disruption this decision causes you and your son, and we are working hard to keep rostering to a minimum. Thus we will not be rostering home every day, just on those occasions when it is absolutely essential.
The implications of this decision are:
Wednesday, 1 June: Year 10 rostered home. The timing of this allows these students to use the time as study leave, as it falls immediately before their mid-year assessments.
Wednesday, 8 June: Year 11 rostered home.
Thursday, 9 June: Year 12 rostered home.
Any further pressure points in the term will continue this rotation by year level, and I will provide as much notice as possible if it becomes necessary.
On all other days over the next fortnight, we welcome all students to school each day, as usual.
Thank you for your support. Our strength as a whānau comes from your care and your very real contribution.
Ngā mihi nui,
