Matthew Lee and Harry White take the stage at the National Shakespeare Schools ProductionNew News Page
In the first week of the October term break, Year 13 students Matthew Lee and Harry White represented Hamilton Boys’ High School and participated in the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand National Shakespeare Schools Production down in Wellington. The SGCNZ NSSP consists of 46 of the country’s top student actors, as well as a student composer and costumier. After a week of intense workshops and rehearsals with world class directors, they put on 2 performances of Romeo and Juliet, Measure for Measure and Henry IV Part I at Sky Stadium and Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre (originally Parliament but changed at the last minute). The performances received rave reviews.
Following the successful completion of SGCNZ NSSP, 24 out of the 48 cast members (or “shakey sponges”) were selected to form the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company 2022. SGCNZ YSC is a national representative theatre troupe that will travel to London in July 2022. For over 2 weeks, they will attend intense workshops and rehearsals with professional Globe directors and actors. At the end of it, they will perform in Shakespeare’s Globe as representatives of Aotearoa New Zealand. We are incredibly proud to announce that both Matthew and Harry have been selected to form SGCNZ YSC 2022 and will represent New Zealand and HBHS overseas in London on Shakespeare’s Globe stage. HBHS is also the only school to have more than one student selected this year.
